Back To School

So I've joined ANOTHER band, and this time it's something a little bit sessy...

Let me introduce you to Free School

They're basically Brum's (UK's?) own/only live cosmic disco act. Their sound is like this huge instrumental mix of shimmering, sun-drenched keys, thumping live drums, battling dual Korg synths and scattered, mangled samples. It's a sort of thinking-person's disco music that serves both the dancefloor and the home stereo. Yes! Stereos! Speakers! Proper CD players?! (...And yeah MP3 players if that's what people are really happy putting up with)

They've got an album coming out on TIRK recordings (Home to some damned fine figures in dance music, including a personal fave, Ilija Rudman), following two awesome EPs and a rather sessy set of remixes, like this one;

They've been a prominent presence on the local scene, largely because they're ace, but also because they're one of the few acts appropriate for most of the line-ups we're (thisistmrw) booking, when most of the bands we're getting over to Brum are electronic. Yeah everyone is guilty of a laptop or a minimoog in their set-up now, but imagine going up on stage without any guitars? And still rocking it some? Hardly anyone's doing it, at least as a convincingly 'live' act.

After a few gigs supporting them as GB&FF, including a particular show at the Silver Bullet in London where, after suffering guitar gremlins, I resorted to dry humping audience members along to my backing track to over-compensate for a lack of actual musicality... They bizzarely invited me to join the fray as a live guest-vocalist-slash-hype man.

So far I've got the former nailed, my own lyrics and all, but I'm still working on the hype-man element though...Booze...Need more of it...Lots of it!

If you fancy checking out the fruits of our recent labours, and indeed my own act GB&FF in support, AND a DJ set from myself and Ray Vaughan from Berlusconi's this weekend, we're all doing our thing/s at the Bulls Head in Moseley this Saturday (28th April). It's Free School's own club night, named after their forthcoming debut album, 'Tender Administration'.

Click that ^^ link ^^ and say hi on the Facebonk event, it's going to be lovely.
